“Everyday life experiences, such as relationship problems or unemployment, can produce just as many, and sometimes even more, symptoms of PTSD”
Francine Shapiro
Developer of EMDR
A variety of ways we encounter the world now in the present (reactions, patterns, relational issues, etc.) may be linked to unprocessed memories of the past. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is founded on the premise that these unprocessed memories are the basis of pathologies, and processed memories are the basis of mental health. Unwanted traits, behaviors, beliefs, and body sensations are not the cause of our suffering, but the symptoms.
Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR is a structured therapy that involves brief focus on traumatic memories while experiencing bilateral stimulation (eye movements). With each set of stimulation (EMs), disturbing information is moved closer to adaptive resolution. EMDR does not only involve recalling challenging memories, but actually activates learning, as new and useful information is accessed and the memory is restored in a different way.
Unprocessed memories not only cause strong emotional reactions, but prevent us from feeling fully. My goal with EMDR is not just to relieve the symptoms of trauma, but to help clients live a more full life, connecting to themselves, others, and the world in a deeper way.
